Dr. Topete was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ. He attended ASU where he obtained his B.S. in biology. He then entered The University of Arizona College of Medicine and graduated in 1992 with an M.D. degree. He then proceeded to complete his Internal Medicine Residency at Saint Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ in 1995. Dr. Topete started working in the field of addiction medicine in 1994. He fell in love with the patient population and the science of addiction. He is board certified by the ABAM (the American Society of Addiction Medicine). Dr. Topete understands his patient’s individual needs and dedicates himself to giving them the best. He is committed to having open communication with referring professionals and the clinical team so that everyone is on the same page throughout the healing process.
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AND NURSING
Melanie is an entrepreneurial minded nurse. She holds a BS of Marketing from Rowan University, an MBA from Arizona State University, and a Nursing degree from Pima Medical Institute. With 18 years of business management experience and 8 years experience working with patients in detox and treatment, it has become her passion. Melanie also has 6 years experience with managing a chain of infectious diseases and travel medicine clinics in Canada, the US and Mexico. She is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Ghana 94-96) where she created the Bolgatanga Basket Weavers Co-operative, a 500 member women’s group. Melanie lives in the Valley with her husband Eric and her two dogs Lucky and Monkey.
Ria Flanagan is currently in the role of Clinical Director at Scottsdale Detox Center. She is licensed as an Independent Substance Abuse Counselor in Arizona and has experience working in a number of treatment settings including; The Meadows Psychiatric Hospital, PHP, IOP, Crisis Management and in her private practice. She is also a Certified as a Sex Addiction Therapist and a Pain Management Coach. She is trained in a number of trauma modalities including; Cognitive Processing Therapy, EMDR, and Post Induction Therapy. Ria was experientially trained at Onsight in Tennessee which included psychodrama and art therapy techniques. She has experience providing counseling services to individuals, couples and families struggling with the effects of addiction and mental illness. Her experience includes working with many issues co-occurring with addiction; PTSD, depression, anxiety, sex addiction, Love addiction/Love avoidance, pain management, combat trauma, codependency, intimacy issues, couple's therapy, personality disorders, eating disorders, grief counseling and process addictions. Ria views healing through a holistic approach addressing family of origin issues, spirituality, mental and physical health as an interconnected system. She has gratitude for the guidance she received while working alongside leaders in the field of psychology including Claudia Black, and Pia Mellody during her 4 years working at The Claudia Black Center and The Meadows. Ria became interested in seeking a Clinical Director position while supervising and training interns during her career. In her personal journey towards health and recovery Ria continues her own training and personal development as a therapist, mother, wife and supervisor and will begin her three year training as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in March of 2019. Ria is in her element when working clinically to support people that are struggling with resistance to change. She is passionate about helping people to navigate back towards the path to health after trauma and encouraging people to not only survive trauma and addiction but to thrive in their recovery.
Lisa has been in the detox and treatment world for almost 11 yrs. She has quickly progressed from a Behavioral Health Para Professional and supervisor to Admissions Director in the industry. The past 7 years she has worked on the front lines in admissions, which is where her passion is. She wants to be the first voice a patient hears when they reach out for help as this field is near and dear to her on many levels. Her own personal journey in recovery provides her the empathy and compassion to be relatable to those who are struggling with addiction. Lisa has joined the admissions team at Scottsdale Detox to continue to help encourage patients to take the first step, which can be the hardest. Lisa has two grown sons and has been married for 8 years and family is everything to her including her precious dog, Madison.
